  The International Conference on Debris-Flow Hazards Mitigation, is the premier forum for the presentation and sharing of knowledge on debris-flow theoretical, experimental, and practical research fields. The confrontation among scholars of the different field of expertise is of utmost interest for the whole scientific community and for the individual know-how of researchers. Research in fields ranging from field studies to laboratory and modelling methodologies are advanced by results reported in DFHM technical sessions. Being the mitigation of debris-flow hazards the leading aim of the Conference, papers on mechanical, geological, morphological, climatological, meteorological, economical and structural aspects are welcome as contribution for the scientific value of this event. The Alpine region of Europe shares, virtually with any mountainous region of the world, common problems related to debris flows and the associated hazards. This consciousness is a relatively recent achievement for the international scientific community. Some catastrophic debris flows and mud flows in the recent past (e.g. Nevado del Ruiz 1985) and many smaller ones but with severe consequences on people, structures and landscape, urge further studies and surveys to understand causes, mechanics and possible countermeasures. The impacts of debris flows become less pronounced when resources are available to cope with the related hazards. Hence, there is a major role for earth scientists and engineers to play in the search for appropriate and sustainable risk mitigation. The general aim of the International Conference on Debris-Flow Hazards Mitigation, is to promote at international level interaction and cooperation among scientists.
