  21 - 31 May 2005 Sozopol, Bulgaria CO-DIRECTORS Prof. Philippe Lambin, Departement de Physique, Facultes Universitaires Notre-Dame de la Paix, Namur, Belgium Prof. Valentin Popov, Faculty of Physics, University of Sofia, Sofia, Bulgaria OBJECTIVES The principal goal of the NATO ASI was to present to the participants (students) some of the most exciting scientific and technological aspects of the carbon nanotube research. This was achieved through lectures of experts in the nanotube area and through discussions. Moreover, the ASI was intended to give the students new ideas for theoretical and experimental study of nanotube systems and to stimulate them for carrying out research in the area. PROGRAMME The programme covered on a comprehensive level a number of topics in the nanotube area including synthesis and processing, characterization and growth mechanisms, scanning tunnelling microscopy and spectroscopy, electronic transport through nanotubes, electron energy-loss spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy of nanotube systems, vibrational and thermal properties, mechanical properties, electronic and optical properties, nanotube transistors and nanoelectronic devices, hydrogen storage and gas absorption in nanotubes
