The 2020 International Conference on Defects in Insulating Materials (ICDIM2020 ) is the 20th edition of a series that began in 1956 at Argonne, USA, with the meeting “Color Centers in Alkali Halides”. International conferences (ICDIM) take place every four years and are alternated with Europe-specific conferences (EURODIM). The series is a broad international forum on the science and technology of defect-related phenomena in crystalline and amorphous wide band-gap materials. Recent ICDIM Conferences were held in South Africa (2000), Latvia (2004), Brazil (2008), USA (2012) and France (2016). An archive of conference photos from some previous ICDIM and EURODIM meetings is available here. ICDIM2020 will be fully "online" and virtual. This is the first time in the series that the conference is organised in such a way, due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Nevertheless, the program will be composed in the similar way as previous meetings in the series, with Plenary talks, oral presentations and poster sessions. All oral presentations will be in the form of recorded videos available in the conference YouTube channel. Posters are very welcome and will be hosted in the conference server. Being a virtual conference will allow participants to be more creative in the posters and oral presentations. One of the important aspect of a conference is the possibility to discuss the scientific aspects of our work and that will be provided in two ways: 1- For the oral presentations, the "Comments" field on YouTube videos can be accessed by all participants and the the presenter can answer the questions and comment.; 2- the poster sessions will have their own Q&A forum where all delegates can see the comments and answers from the poster presenter, improving the discussions. All that will be available for many weeks, and not just on the official "conference week" improving the discussions. The ICDIM2020 webpage, emails, Q&A groups and YouTube channel are all hosted by Federal University of Sergipe, Brazil, and we are very grateful to all the IT team members for their help.
