5G networks will provide huge potentials in realizing high-data rate, low latency mobile data services within the next five years when more and more people and devices set to be connected. The trend will obviously move towards smart and autonomous devices. Despite the growing research activities surrounding the 5G, utilizing its potential on offer for public safety and emergency services in disaster situations remains an attractive and unfulfilled area. The number of victims and the scale of damage from disaster events worldwide, such as earthquakes, mining disasters, flooding and avalanches are depressingly significant every year. During those events, it was very often that the communication means are completely destroyed and may only be partially available, which leads to difficulty in rescuing activities. It is thus very relevant that much more effort in research in the latest mobile 5G technologies is required to investigate how the public safety and emergency management systems can be improved further in the event the disaster strikes. Telecommunication can obviously save lives. This workshop aims to bring together academic scientists, researchers and industrial engineers to exchange and share their experiences and research results on all aspects of investigating 5G communication networks for disaster and emergency management systems.
