Since 1969, lunar laser ranging (LLR) is an effective tool of high-precision measurements of the Earth–Moon distance, that has provided many of the best tests of fundamental gravitation. Starting with a precision of 100 mm the march to higher precision continues to this day, now entering the millimeter regime, and promising continued improvement in scientific results. A further increase in accuracy is associated primarily with deployment on the Moon a new large single retroleflector because the five reflector arrays, that are illuminated now from the LLR stations on the Earth, give a main contribution in the total measurement accuracy due to the libration of the Moon. This report introduces key aspects of the technique, observables and science objectives for lunar laser ranging with submillimeter precision (Super LLR), as well as summarizes the current state of the art.
