Formation of ordered (microphase separated) block copolymer nanostructures is a promising route towards creating isoporous membranes suitable for technological applications. Here we address some basic theoretical issues underlying purposeful designing such membranes: i) what is the relationship between the block copolymer architecture, solution-casting conditions and the membrane morphology? ii) what is the relationship between the membrane morphology and permeability? In particular, we find conditions for bi-continuous isotropic morphologies to occur and show that given the same selectivity the permeability of the membranes that do possess a bi-continual morphology could be much higher than of those that are anisotropic (lamellar, cylindrical).
