The Compressed Life Review (CLR) is mnemonic illusion of having “the entire life flashing before eyes”. This research was guided by our concern over the retrospective methodology in the CLR studies. We developed a first lab-based experimental technique aimed for eliciting the CLR with no risk to participants. It consisted of listening to superimposing audio records of previously trained verbal cues to the individually composed set of self-defining memories (SDMs). The technique evoked self-reported CLR-like experience in a half of 20 participants. We confirmed a significant similarity in eye movement patterns between a single SDM condition and a “choir” of SDMs condition in self-reported CLR experiencers. In both cases cues caused a lower eye activity in contrast to listening to a single neutral phrase and a “choir” of neutral phrases which leaded to visual exploration.
