We present an overview of the research project on northern forests of Russia which runs in 2018-2020 and is supported by the Ministry of science and higher education in Russia and by the British council in the UK. To date, we have developed pilot techniques to measure tree stand parameters for pine, spruce and birch forests in Kola Peninsula, on the basis of UAV surveys and ground data; completed preliminary analyses of multemporal forest dynamics since 2000 for MODIS leaf area index and growing stock volume; selected climatic datasets (for Kola peninsula). We are developing validation and scaling-up techniques (ground data to MODIS) and planning ground data collection in i) Kola Peninsula, NW Russia, and ii) Sakha, Eastern Siberia (larch forests) in 2019.
