Most of the time we go through life with our eyes and ears closed, we don’t concentrate on the immediate experiences that we’re having, on the things that are getting through to our senses. Creative writing teaches us to perceive more clearly what custom has blinded us to. Good writing depends to a large extent on well-developed observational skills, on your ability to relate what you have noticed, even if you choose to transform it imaginatively. You must learn to evoke any scene by recounting it with great sensory detail, using sight, touch, smell, taste, and hearing in your description. In this workshop, we’ll be working on observational writing. The speaker will share with you some activities aimed at sharpening your students’ sensibilities.
