Modern Russian has pronominal elements and particles that tend to take second position in a clause. Prototypically, they are cliticised to the first stressed word or first sentence constituent, but move further to the right if sentence-initial elements are communicatively marked. Similar relations are attested in languages where second position is reserved for predicational enclitics, e. g. in South and West Slavic and in Old Novgorod Russian.
