Currently the main efforts in the study of cellular bases of learning are focused on memory acquired through individual experience. However animals can infer knowledge from experience of others, the social transmission of food preference (STFP) being a widespread model for such memory. The neurobiological mechanisms underlying STFP remain not sufficiently understood, as well as the relationship between individual and social memory aquired by one animal. The goal of the present study was to investigate these mechanisms and relations at the cellular level. For this purpose, we utilized the STFP paradigm in mice. Animals were trained to form a successful short-term (1 hour later), and long-term (24 hours) memory in this task. Then we performed immunohistochemical mapping of the behavior-induced neuronal expression of the of immediate early gene product c-Fos following acquisition and 24-h recall of individual and social memories and identified the brain regions involved in in these two forms of learning. In addition, we registered the calcium activity of CA1 neurons during the acquisition and retrieval of individual and social memories in the same freely moving mice using minimicroscopy. We found the strong specialization of CA1 neurons activity related to feeding and several other forms of behavior in this task. Altogether in this study we report for the first time the activity of hippocampal CA1 neurons during STFP task and describe the relationship between cellular representations of individually and socially acquired memories.
