The following article suggests the importance of the structure of meaning of onomatopoetic words in the process of searching translating equivalents. Core of the onomatopoetic word can have its own meaning belonging to one of the categories (sounds, tactile perception, movement, visual perception etc.), while structure of a word can express supplementary meanings such as “speed”, “intensity”, “loudness”, “singularity”, etc. It is important to single out semes relevant for each case of translation. Besides, meaning of some polysemantic onomatopoetic words can move from specific to abstract meaning which should also be taken into consideration during translation. Several examples of translating equivalents from the “Japanese-Russian Dictionary of onomatopoetic words” are given in the article.
