One of the most substantial criteria for the usage of ferrocenyl-terminated dendrimers as ion sensors is the electrochemical reversibility of the associated redox process. The periphery modification of rigid aromatic dendrimers with flexible alkylferrocenyl termini significantly improved this desired property compared to the previously synthesized dendrimers that do not have flexible fragments. The peak-to-peak separations were 63–73 mV depending on the dendrimer generation (1, 2) and the number of methylene units in the alkyl chain (n = 6, 11). A platinum disk electrode modified with the second generation dendrimer withstands washing with organic solvents and therefore can be used for multiple ion sensing because an analyte can be washed out without affecting the layer of a dendrimer.
