It is a known fact that the speech of drug-addicted persons, in particular, of female drug addicts, can be distinguished perceptually. As was shown in our former paper [Potapova et al 2018], there are a number of characteristics, such as unstable speech tempo variations, relatively low loudness and narrowed pitch range, that mark the depressed cognitive state accompanying drug intoxication. However, it was still unclear whether these characteristics have reliable acoustic correlates that could be formalized strongly enough to enable automatic detection. Further research revealed that, although automatic detection of drug intoxication by voice or speech alone is still problematic, certain acoustic clues do exist, and the essence of these clues is the remarkable instability of acoustic parameters. Some examples of this phenomenon will be presented in this paper.
