Nanodiamonds are highly promising material for the use in nanomedicine as fluorescent markers, carriers of drugs, adsorbents of heavy metals or bases for bioconjugates. For these applications, as well as for the creation of the stable suspensions of nanodiamonds, the study of interactions of nanodiamonds with the surrounding molecules is highly relevant. In this work the interactions of detonated nanodiamonds (DND) with the molecules of aqueous solutions of ionic surfactants were studied using Raman and fluorescence spectroscopy. Aqueous suspensions of DND with different surface functionalization – of the DND with carboxylic groups (DND-COOH, hydrophilic surface) and of the hydrogenated DND (DND-H, hydrophobic surface) – were investigated. The aim of the research was to study the mutual influence of nanoparticles and surrounding molecules on the properties of each other. On the one hand, nanoparticles were found to change the strength of the hydrogen bonds in their environment. These changes depend on the degree of hydrophilicity of the DND surface groups significantly. Further, the influence of hydrophilicity and hydrophobicity of DND surfaces on the process of micelle formation of surfactants was observed. On the other hand, the molecules of water and surfactants affect the fluorescent properties of the nanoparticles. The hypotheses about the mechanisms of the observed interactions between DND and surrounding molecules is proposed.
