Traditionally ion-exchange retention of small inorganic and organic ions in ion chromatography (IC) is considered as solely electrostatic interactions between hydrated ions and oppositely charged functional groups of ion-exchange resin. In this case the effect of secondary interactions was considered as insignificant and affecting peak symmetry and peak broadening of bulky polarisable ions. In the recent years the situation is changed and the effect of multiple interactions combining electrostatic attraction and repulsion, coordination, hydrophobic, hydrogen bonding and others is counted for the explanation of observed ion-exchange selectivity.
