As global power shifts to the East and the liberal international order enters into crisis, those secondary powers’ orientations during this interregnum pose puzzle for scholars. At this point, the case of Turkey could be illumination considering its swing from Europeanization to Eurasianism under an increasingly authoritarian regime. Drawing on “autocratic linkages” and “regime survival” concepts, this paper argues that domestic politics (i.e. the incumbent President Erdoğan led the JDP’s political survival strategy) should be emphasized to make sense of Turkey’s Eurasianist turn. This process has accelerated in the aftermath of the 15 July coup attempt and gained further momentum in the 2018-2022 economic crisis. In this context, those “authoritarian gravity centers” in Eurasia (i.e., Russia and China) have emerged as principal partners to sustain the JDP’s rule in Turkey.
