Bertrand Arthur William Russell was a founder of analytic philosophy, public intellectual, mathematician and logician. A man who is scrupulous about facts, meticulous about details, unbiased wrote a great work "A History of Western Philosophy", where he described the history of philosophy from the pre-Socratics to Bergson. In this report, we will be interested in the chapters devoted to the origin and development of Greek civilization. Why can it be so interesting? Bertrand Russell is an atheist, he believed that religion interferes with knowledge, aggravates fear, makes a person dependent, increases wars and suffering. In his book, he wrote that the Greek miracle happened because the Greek civilization was saved from religion. The ancient Greeks really experienced transformations. They have overcome the path from myth to logos, from gods to science, they were as passionate as they were prudent. We can plunge into this phenomenon through the eyes of an atheist, a logician and an intellectual. In contrast to Russell, we explore a position based on the ideas of the anthropological view of the philosopher N.N. Rostova, where the driving force of a person is represented through dreams, visions, appearances, images. According to N.N. Rostova, man and his consciousness disappear together with God, since God is a form and structure that orders the chaos of human subjectivity. Religious dogmas can limit, but also open up new perspectives. As a result, we will answer the question whether it is possible that if civilization is saved from religion, it will make a leap in its development.
