The two-position RCS is calculated basing on the values of the electromagnetic near-field on a small area of a spherical surface. The near-field measurement for scanning over a truncated spherical surface is modeled by diffraction on a finite perfectly conducting cylinder. The traditional method of the near-field to far-field transform is modified by supplementing the scanned field outside the scanning area with the values of the field calculated using an approximate method – the method of physical optics. Numerical experiments have shown that the presented modification makes it possible to significantly improve the result of calculating the RCS.
