Modern agricultural activities are spread all over the oecumene, and play important role even in the Arctic, where natural conditions are mostly adverse for conventional practices. Frequent reports on agribusiness achievements in northern regions proof that agricultural frontier is moving north. How far North it has shifted in different countries? Which are the driving forces of this geographical phenomena? How much national and regional authorities pay for develop agriculture in the Arctic? Can this development relay on a balance between technological breakthrough and aboriginal experience? Which changes in land use, structure of economy, way of life of locals and newcomers happen in areas of recent “Arctic” agricultural expansion, and how far can these regions be agriculturally sustainable? The answer to these questions can be drawn from comparison of US Alaska, Canada, Greenland, Iceland, Scandinavia, Finland and Russia.
