The most well-known and the strongest error self-compensation effect is observed in the production of narrow band pass filters using turning point optical monitoring. In fact, it is only through this effect that the most complex telecom filters can be successfully manufactured. The error self-compensation effect is related to the correlation of errors caused by the optical monitoring procedure. Not only turning point monitoring, but also all other optical monitoring techniques cause errors in the thicknesses of coating layers to be correlated. Therefore, a strong error self-compensation effect can take place in the production of coatings using other types of monochromatic and broadband optical monitoring techniques. In particular, this effect is important for the production of polarizers for laser systems of nuclear fusion facilities using broadband optical monitoring. In the case of monochromatic optical monitoring, the existence of a strong error self-compensation effect was proved only recently. In general, recent results related to the error self-compensation effect open up new horizons in the application of optical monitoring for the production of high-quality optical coatings.
