It is a well-known fact that body language plays a crucial role in face-to-face verbal communication. Gestures, facial expressions (including eye-contact), tone of voice - all the constituents of non-verbal communication either contribute to successfully passing on a message or considerably hinder the process. In the talk I am planning to shed light on the following key aspects of body language and verbal communication: 1) the connection between body language and mental perception (lookers, listeners, touchers); 2) types of body language and preference for certain words and word-combinations; 3) body language in English culture. Thus, the famous anthropologist Kate Fox writes that the generic "body language" should be more aptly called "body English", if one wants to describe its peculiarities in English culture. This opens up new vistas for teaching students, because linguocultural studies are becoming increasingly more important in the education process. As an outstanding British linguist David Crystal states, "it is essential to provide a perspective which will enable the students of English to move towards deeper understanding of various cultural aspects of the language they are learning".
