In order to determine the concentrations of vanadium ions in different magnetic states and to establish the correlation between magnetic parameters and electronic structure we have studied magnetic properties (T=2–75 K, B<7.5 T) of Pb1-x-ySnxVyTe (x=0.05-0.18, y<0.01). It is found that the field and temperature dependences of the magnetization M contain two main contributions: Brillouin-type paramagnetism due to the presence of magnetic V2+ and V3+ ions and diamagnetism of the host lattice. Experimental results are discussed in the framework of the model of the electronic structure rearrangement with doping, suggesting a change in the ratio of the concentrations of V2+ and V3+ ions along the ingot. Approximations of M(B) and M(T) dependences by the sum of two modified Brillouin functions corresponding to contributions of vanadium ions in two different magnetic states are performed.
