Two-stage mechanical alloying technique was applied to prepare nanocrystalline TiFe intermetallic compound (IMC) and to deposit the polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) protective coating on the powder surface. The metal-polymer composites were characterized by XRD, TGA, SEM and were studied in their interaction with hydrogen. It was shown that the PTFE layer prevented oxidation of the metal surface and resisted the IMC activation procedure required for hydrogenation. Hydrogen permeability through the PTFE protective coating ensured fast kinetics of hydrogen uptake and release and did not alter equilibrium absorption and desorption pressures
