Effects of applied dc current, in terms of magnitude and passing time, on giant magnetoimpedance (GMI) and magnetic hysteresis properties of the glass-coated Co71Fe5B11Si10Cr3 microwire with a total diameter of 29.5 μm and a core diameter of 23.9 μm were investigated in this work. An annealing process (accompanied with Joule-heating effect) was performed on the wire during applying dc current with different time intervals, aiming to enhance its magnetic properties as Joule heating has been shown to be useful to tailor the magnetic properties of the glass-coated microwires. The annealing process led to the creation of a specific magnetic anisotropy of a helical type in the concerned wire, and consequently, improved the GMI response in the wire under the study making it more suitable for magnetic sensing applications. Joule heating using a dc current was found to improve the magnetic properties significantly.
