The aim of the project is to develop a virtual reconstruction of the Passion Virgin Monastery - a unique monument of historical and cultural heritage of Moscow. The monastery was built by Tsar’s decree in 1649. The same name was given later to the surrounding city area, which has become one of the most important squares of Moscow (Strastnaya Square). The monastery was rebuilt several times in the 18th and 19th centuries. Burning with fire, the monastery survived during the invasion of Napoleon, it changed its architectural appearance and social importance. After a fire in 1812, the monastery was rebuilt, the new Gate tower with a tent and a clock was erected. It was unique in its architectural appearance. The monastery became one of the spiritual centers of the city. He kept its maiden school, a library and a hospice . At the monastery at different times temples were built , the refectory, cells, etc. For nearly 250 years, this area has experienced several periods of radical renovations, it changed its social role and infrastructure. In 1919, the Monastery was abolished and in 1937 all of its buildings were demolished. Renamed in 1931, the Strastnaya area became known as Pushkin square. The current appearance of the square almost resembles the form of Strastnaya square in the beginning of XX century. Studying the history of Moscow, its historical appearance one needs to create reconstruction of streets and squares. This is the actual task of preserving the historical and cultural heritage of the capital city. Although in the recent decades various public organizations and associations made proposals for the restoration (reconstruction) of the Passion Virgin Monastery on the territory of Pushkin Square, the chances of implementation of these proposals are almost zero. In this regard, it seems natural to raise a question of the virtual reconstruction of the famous Monastery with the surrounding historical and architectural ensemble at several time slices, covering the period from the middle of the 17th century to the beginning of the 20th century. This problem is posed for the first time. Adequate tool for building virtual reconstruction of lost objects of historical and cultural heritage are provided by methods and technologies of 3D modeling . Using adequate computer facilities allows historians to implement complex historical sources characterizing the reconstructed object in its evolution, to get its spatial reconstruction at several time slices. Advantages of using 3D model are mainly associated with the possibility of reconstruction and interactive viewing of the model verification with access via the Internet. It should be noted that we revealed a large array of archival material on the history and the spatial structure of the Monastery, including drawings, plans , inventories of buildings of the Monastery, clerical documentation, photos dated 19th - early 20th centuries, prints , etc. These materials are mostly revealed in the Moscow Archives: CIAM ( f. 54 , 203, 454, 1215 ) , TSAGM (F. 680 ) , TSANTDM (F. 1), RGADA ( f.248 , 280, 390) , GIM (Department of written sources, f.132 , 440 ), and also in the Moscow museum of architecture. The information potential of the revealed sources allows to construct a series of virtual reconstructions of the Monastery complex and the historical appearance of the Strastnaya square. The project participants' experience in creation of historical 3D models will be used to develop the virtual reconstruction of the Passion Virgin Monastery.
