Аннотация:In 2010 the first FIFA World Cup and the first sport mega-event took place on the African continent. South Africa wanted to present itself as an ambassador of the Afri-can continent and had high hopes for the World Cup. Apart from an economic upswing and an improved image, the World Cup was to promote the nation-building process of the developing country and thus have positive socio-economic effects.
These effects were analysed by evaluating the literature and conducting expert inter-views with tourists, journalists and South Africans ten years after the mega-event. It is concluded that the World Cup was successfully implemented, but the long-term socio-economic impacts are below the country's expectations.
