June 9-30, 2019 the Summer course on embryology of marine invertebrates took place at the Pertzov White Sea Biological Station, Russia. The course gathered together established investigators and young researches representing different biological disciplines. Among our students were: Penelope Ayala (National University of Mexico, Mexico), Andreas Denner (University of Vienna, Austria), Isabel Dittmann (University of Innsbruck, Austria), Alexandra Koynova (Saint-Petersburg State University, Russia), Luoyang Li (Northwest University, China), Danila Voronov (Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn, Italy), Ian Velloso Randolph (Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, Brasil), Juan Antonio Ruiz Santiesteban (University pf Zagreb, Croatia), Maria Troshina (IVF clinic AltraVita, Russia), Matthew Travert (University of Kansas, USA), Meghan Yap-Chiongco (University of Alabama, USA), Miguel Silva (University of Arkansas, USA), Natsumi Hookabe (Hokkaido University, Japan), Paul Knabl (University of Vienna, Austria). Together they composed very strong team of motivated students majoring in the fields of embryology, morphology, cell biology, evolutionary development biology, systematics, ecology, paleontology, genomics and bioinformatics, that complement each other and contribute in communication and discussion issues at different levels. Our teachers gave lectures and hands-on training devoted to (1) the embryology of the certain invertebrate group inhabited the White Sea and (2) basics of experimental embryology in order to understand the molecular mechanisms of developmental processes. Alexander Ereskovsky, Igor Kosevich, Yulia Kraus, Andrey Prudkovsky, Vitaly Kozin, Andreas Wanninger, Olga Kotenko, Svetlana Maslakova, Carsten Wolff, and Vladimir Malakhov trained students in descriptive embryology of Porifera, Cnidaria, Echinodermata, Annelida, Mollusca, Bryozoa, Nemertea, Crustacea, Nematoda, whereas Ina Arnone, Grigory Genikhovich, Carmen Andrikou, Andrey Lavrov - experimental embryology to study cell morphogenesis, molecular mechanisms, and gene network. Thus, the Course was a comprehensive platform demonstrating main approaches to study developmental biology as well as showing the developmental processes at different levels from morphology to gene network.
