Body size is an important parameter that largely determines the biology, morphology and physiology of animals. The range of body sizes in insects is tens of times higher than in any of the orders of mammals, and twice as high as in any of the classes of vertebrates. Nevertheless, even the smallest insects retain the general plan of the structure, functionality and multimodality of the sense organs, despite the many structural and morphological adaptations associated with a decrease in body size (Hanken and Wake, 1993). The organs of vision and the antennal sensory system play an essential role in the search for food, sexual partner, substrate or host, during navigation, migration, flight (Guerenstein et al., 2004; Krishnan et al., 2012; Rossi Stacconi & Romani, 2013, etc.). Compound eyes and antennal sensilla have been studied in a wide range of objects of different size classes, but scaling at the cellular level is still not well understood. A large-scale comparative analysis of the quantitative and structural characteristics of the antennal sensilla and compound eyes of insects showed that different types and parameters of the sensory organs respond differently to changes in body size (Diakova et al., 2018; Makarova et al., 2019). The sensory armament of insect antennas is actively used for species diagnostics, especially in miniature forms. A decrease in body size is accompanied by a significant decrease in antenna size (Symonds & Elgar, 2013), and in the number of antennae and sensilla (Polilov, 2015a, 2017). A comparative analysis of the antennal sensilla of the smallest ovarian wasps (Megaphragma) with the antennal sensilla of large Chalcidoidea and Ichneumonoidea showed that miniaturization leads to a significant decrease in the number of antennal sensilla, but does not affect their type composition and size (Diakova et al, 2018). Currently, a significant part of the data on evolution, comparative anatomy, and issues related to the effect of size on the structure of photoreceptors belongs to foreign researchers (Meyer-Rochow, 2015, 2019; Fischer et al., 2010, 2011, 2013a, b, 2019, etc.) ... For the first time, our group studied the structure and ultrastructural organization of the compound eyes of the smallest parasitic (Makarova et al., 2015, 2019) and free-living (Makarova et al., 2019) insects. It has been shown that a decrease in the size of compound eyes is accompanied by a reduction in the number and size of facets, as well as strong compaction and reduction of some of the structural elements in the ommatidium. The review will highlight the results of studies concerning the effect of body size on the structure of insects' sense organs. The main sections of the review will include a detailed analysis of all available data on the scaling of the visual organs and the antennal sensory system of insects, as well as a general analytical section on the effect of scaling on ultrastructure and dimensional characteristics of the senses. Particular attention will be paid to modern morphological studies of insect sensory organs and the assessment of all available Russian-language literature on this topic. Quantitative analysis will include data on the number and size of insect sense organs from more than 200 literature sources. It is planned to use a number of modern approaches to the analysis of quantitative data, a comparative analysis of key works on the anatomy of insect sensory organs is carried out, a unique database of quantitative and structural characteristics of antennal sensilla and compound eyes of insects of different size classes has been created. A large-scale quantitative analysis of feelings will allow identifying key scaling trends for both individual orders and for insects as a whole. The review will cover all the available information on the structure and laws of scaling of sensory organs and can become a key source of data on the evolution of sensory organs in insects, and the most complete scientific theoretical base for modeling artificial sensors and optical systems.
