In the middle of the XIXth century, when the new modernist discourse was formed, the characters of Shakespeare's drama became the entire part of the common European “cultural mythology” as well as the biblical and antique heroes or the historical characters of the classical theater; they started to be used as symbolic character-images, whose diversity of senses intend a variety of interpretations. On the morrow of Romanticism (“The Death of Ophelia”, of Eugène Delacroix), the modernist artists are researching the character of Ophelia, while her innocence, insanity and “mudder” death are making her fate extremely edificatory for the mentors of the new art. The Shakespeare's Ophelia on the picture of John Everett Millais, also as in the adolescent poetic experiments of Arthur Rimbaud, expressionists Georg Heym and Gottfried Benn is turning into the archetype of modernist culture. The death of the beautiful maiden becames a symbolic meaning of the destruction of poetry, beauty and purity in a world, that is full of violence and despair. The perusal this character finds among the Russian poets (A.Blok, M. Tsvetaeva, B. Pasternak, G.Ivanov). So the drowned woman in water turns up to be the analogue of the myth about bedevil Orpheus, which became actual in the XX century.
