The isothermal sections of the previously unknown phase diagram of the VNiCr system at 1125, 1275 and 1425 K were constructed using diffusion couples and equilibrated alloys. It was established that the chromium-alloyed σ phase (based on the equiatomic compound VNi) developed in the ternary system at an electron concentration of 6.3-7.3 electron atom-1. With increasing temperature the chromium solubility in this phase rose from 29.0 at.% at 1125 K to 42 at.% at 1425 K. Apart from the σ phase, the superstructure VNi3 with insignificant chromium content, existed in the VNiCr system at 1275 K as a result of the ordering of the nickel-based α solid solution. With decreasing temperature another ordered phase (VNi2) appeared in the α solid solution. The maximum chromium solubility in the superstructures at 1125 K amounted to 4.9 at.% for θ-phase VNi3 and 9.8 at.% for 5-phase VNi2. © 1987.
