Abstract. The research presented in the article focuses on language means denoting iteration and multiplicity in original English texts and their Russian translations. Contemporary functional linguistic theories consider iteration and multiplicity as a functional category, and this idea is proved by the results of our comparative analysis. Neither English nor Russian language possesses a universal grammatical way of denoting iteration, that’s why translators employ various lexical, morphological and syntax means interpreting the same passage. Dealing with ambiguous fragments, a translator has to choose either iterative or non-iterative interpretation, and his choice affects narrative perspective, grounding and timespace.
