Аннотация:This paper presents the results of a pilot ultra-sound study comparing velar and uvular stops in Tatar andQumuq (also referred to by its Russian name, Kumyk). Theyare both indigenous Turkic languages of Russia, and are cate-gorised in different subbranches of northwestern Turkic. Tataris spoken by about 5M speakers, and Qumuq by under 430Kspeakers (Eberhard, Simons, & Fennig2019), the vitality of thelatter classified as “vulnerable” (Moseley2010).As in many Turkic languages, dorsals alternate between velarand uvular in Tatar and Qumuq, depending on the dorsalityof adjacent vowels. Exceptions are found in borrowed words, mainly from Arabic and Russian. This study documents velarand uvular stops in the so-called “native” lexicon (words knownto not be recently borrowed) in the two languages, with obstru-ents and adjacent vowels corresponding in dorsality.
