Аннотация:This article examines the consequences of English becoming an international means of intercultural communication – lingua franca of the globalised world – for the approach to teaching English phonetics to learners with different L1 backgrounds in terms of the choice of a pronunciation model. The paper analyses the shift of the learners’ attitude towards foreign accent reduction and becoming aware of English language varieties, in particular, different variants of spoken English.
