Аннотация:The article discusses an example of the successful participation of the state institution of Costa Rica — the Clodomiro Picado Institute — in the implementation of the sustainable development goals proclaimed by the UN. One of them is ensuring a healthy lifestyle and promoting well-being for everyone at any age. Achieving this goal involves solving the problem of reducing the prevalence of neglected tropical diseases (NTD), characteristic of tropical and subtropical regions and countries with low levels of health systems development. In 2017, WHO added the problem of snakebites to the list of neglected ropical diseases, recognizing its importance on a global scale, and in 2019 adopted the global strategy for prevention and control of snakebite envenoming, designed for the period until 2030.
The problem of snake bites remains relevant for Latin America. But it was on this continent that the first effective practices of their therapy and institutions appeared, which later became a model for other countries (Butantan Institute in Brazil). In 1970, the Clodomiro Picado Institute (ICP) was founded in Costa Rica, which today is one of the leading research and production centers for antivenomes (anti-snake serum). ICP is actively involved in solving the global problem of snakebites, some of the products in its product line are focused on markets external to Latin America (countries of equatorial Africa, Sri Lanka, Papua New Guinea). ICP activities contribute to the achievement of sustainable development goals in terms of improving the health and well-being of the population by reducing the severity of snakebite problems and overcoming local health crises caused by deficiency of antivenomes.
