Human Memory and Glycerophosphocholine Level in Hippocampusтезисы доклада

- Аннотация: The role of glycerophosphocholine (GCPh), a human brain metabolite, in cognitive functions is still being discussed. It is known that GCPh level in the brain is increased in patients with Alzheimer’s disease (AD) (Walter, 2004), one of the main symptoms of which is memory decline. However, administration of GCPh in patients with AD increased memory functioning (Moreno, 2003). In present study we explored the relation between GPCh level in hippocampi and memory processes in healthy humans. We performed A.R.Luria's neuropsychological memory tests (modified by Glozman, 1999) for 18 right-handed females (age - 59±16) without neurological or mental disorders. The test results were analysed with factor analysis. Further analysis included a factor of verbal, visual and visuo-spatial memory capacity and a factor of the amount of different memory errors, such as contaminations and sequence errors. GPCh level in both hippocampi was measured with 3T proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy. We calculated correlations between individual behavioral and biochemical measurements. Results: Memory capacity correlates positively with GCPh level in left hippocampus (r=0.51, p=0.03), whereas the amount of memory errors correlates negatively with it (r=-0.53, p=0.02). No significant correlations between memory capacity and errors and GCPh level in right hippocampus were revealed. Thus, high GPCh concentration in hippocampus is significant for memory capacity and permanency in healthy human brain.
