Abstract: The paper analyzes the use of dative athematic ending -ι in Homeric poems and its metrical position. Forms in arsis are considered, in each case original length or position lengthening of the vowel is highlighted. In the first group (53 forms) the dative occurs before the words that go back to the root with a single consonant at the beginning (e.g. οἴξασα κληῗδι θύρας (<*dhur-) ἱεροῖο δόμοιο (Il. VI, 89) ʻopening the door of the sanctuary with a key’); in the second group (34 forms) — before the words that historically start with a group of consonants (Fρ-, *sṷ *sr, *sm, *sn, *dṷ-, e.g. ἦ ῥα, καὶ ὁρμήθη ὄρεϊ νῐφόεντι (< snigṷh-) ἐοικὼς (Il. XIII, 754) ʻhe said and rushed like a mountain with a snow-capped peak’). The forms are compared with Mycenaean examples (the name of the goddess Ἀρτέμιδι with long ending -ι and Mycenaean a-te-mi-te /Artemitei/). The distribution of the forms is analyzed: from 53 forms 40 are attested in the Iliad and just 13 in the Odyssey. Most forms occur in the 11th (6 examples: Διί 200, 473, 611, μάστιγι 532, ὕδατι 830) and in the 2nd (4 examples: Διί 169, 407, 636, ὑπερμενέϊ 116) book of the Iliad. The most often metrical positions are the 3rd arsis (18 forms) and the 4th arsis (15 forms). In the forms before the words starting with one consonant, long -ι can be considered as the reflex of an older dative ending -ei, widely spread in Mycenaean dialect.
