Аннотация:The Khibiny Mountains are considered to be a territory of high avalanche activity and high industrialization. Thus observations of temporal changes of seasonal snow are of high importance not only as an impact to the environment but also to human living conditions due to present climate change. Observations were conducted simultaneously on a plateau Lovchorr (1050 m) and at the Khibiny scientific station field site (365 m) using data from automatic weather station loggers and control snow profiles. For every snow profile the following characteristics have been analyzed: grain shape and grain size, hardness index, density, liquid water content and snow temperature by layers. Accordingly to the weather conditions different tendencies of snow-cover changes were registered. In general, snowpack has a poor structural diversity and mainly consists of a sequence of rounded grains. The all important part played by the wind is often evident for all altitudes. Observations in recent years show significant changes in ice crusts and depth hoar formation. Changes in the structure and properties of snow may create conditions for avalanching and the determination of these changes allows us to estimate the evolution of the structure and properties of snow layers using standard meteorological information.
