Аннотация:We propose a new method for identifying local changes in the brain – scMRI (Structural Changes Magnetic Resonance Imaging). The method has the potential to detect subtle structural brain changes, which are characteristic of neurogenesis processes. The method is based on the analysis of the changes in the brightness of the voxels in the MRI-image of the brain. Those changes are assumed to reflect the changes in the proportions of white/gray matter, which are induced by neurogenesis and other processes leading to structural changes in the brain. The comparison of MRI-images taken before and after some factors provoking neurogenesis were active allows to assess the presence of treatment effects, as well as their magnitude and precise localization. The difference between scMRI and the fMRI method, which is also based on the comparison of MRI-images, is that in scMRI the time lag between successive images is not seconds (as in fMRI) but days or weeks, that is the time needed for structural micro-changes to take place in the brain (Figure 1). In scMRI, both MRI-images are aligned voxel by voxel by the means of the SmartScan algorithm with subsequent normalization.
