Аннотация:The occipital-synarcual joint of two species of ratfishes (Chimaera monstrosa and Chimaera phantasma) was studied. The saddle-shaped articulation surface indicates the possibility of movements in the sagittal and frontal planes, which was confirmed by manipulations with joint preparations. We provide detailed description of muscles controlling the joint. First description of the m. epaxialis profundus was given. We propose that pronounced mobility restricted to the two planes may be linked primarily with the accurate prey targeting.
