Аннотация:In this chapter we describe connections between the seasonal statistics ofextratropical synoptic-scale atmospheric vortices in the Northern Hemisphere, andparticularly in the North Atlantic and Pacific regions, and phases of principal interannualto multi-decadal climatic signals, or leading climate modes, such as El Ninio-SouthernOscillation (ENSO), North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), Pacific Decadal Oscillation(PDO) and Atlantic Multi-decadal Oscillation (AMO). These modes account for theessential proportion of both SST anomalies and associated atmospheric signal in theNorthern Hemisphere on the interannual to multi-decadal scale. The relationships arederived from empirical data. Archives of Northern Hemisphere extratropical cyclonesand cyclone tracks from 1951 to 2010 were compiled based on 6-hrs the 1000 hPageopotential heights from NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data. The monthly characteristics ofthe cyclonic activity (cyclone frequency, area and intensity) for the cells of a 5-degreegrid and for selected regions were used to calculate climate statistics and evaluaterelationships between cyclonic activity and climate modes. Analysis of the interannual tomulti-decadal variability of cyclonic characteristics associated with the NAO, ENSO,PDO and AMO showed that their joint influence accounts for significant proportion oftotal variance of winter cyclone parameters in the neighborhood of principal stormtracksand in other regions of the Northern Hemisphere.
